Saving Money at Christmas

October 30th, 2008

There are many ways to save money at Christmas. Many people plan on having a little extra during December but it is common to suffer severely financially into the New Year because of the lack of planning. Here are several tips you can practice to help you have more money during the holiday season.

1. Start your shopping early. Many people don’t shop for their Christmas gifts up until the last minute. You might be like everyone else where something always happens and you need a little extra money. For example, you get a flat tire, you miss two days of work and have a short paycheck, you loan money to a friend and they cannot pay you back, etc. Start your Christmas shopping in October. You don’t have to have Christmas trees to put the gifts under then but you won’t be so strapped when the holiday does come.

2. Compare everything. If you are dead set on buying a few specific gifts you can compare prices online and in the stores. This will ensure you get the best deal possible. If you can shop early you won’t be taken advantage of by the fake holiday sales also. Always compare. If you wait until the last minute to gift shop you may not have time to compare and other stores may be out of the item because they had the best deal.

3. Have a good idea what you are going to buy. You don’t have to know exactly the gifts you will place under the prelit Christmas trees but an idea is a good place to start. As you look over your list of people you want to buy for you should make a list of all of the items you need to buy. This will help you plan your shopping wisely. You should plan out the shops you will go to and not wander aimlessly. You might find you are buying ‘possible’ gifts for people and wasting your money.

4. One of the best ways for saving money while you are shopping for gifts to place under the artificial Christmas trees is by not splurging on additional accessories. This means cut out the abundance of fudge, candies, and Christmas garbage. These additional items could be an extra tank full of gas. Buy what is on your list. Don’t overdo it with holiday fun items. If you love these things, wait until the day or week after Christmas and you will find them marked down to half off of the prices.

There are many ways you can save money during the holidays when you are trying to fill your list of people to buy for. Some of the things you can do is not splurge on the additional Christmas fillings and items, know exactly what you are going to buy for each person or have a good idea, compare everything with many different stores including online, and always start your Christmas shopping in early October. This will help you save a lot of money over the holiday season.
